How Women Can Improve In Business - Marilyn Gordon
Thursday Sep 29, 2022
Thursday Sep 29, 2022
Men and women communicate differently. Most women have negative thought patterns that affect the way they communicate, using 'women speak' e.g. being afraid of being assertive, not taking credit as much, staying away from saying "I" and instead use "we", posing the statement as a question, using words that make you sound unsure (should, could etc), endless apologizing etc.
In this episode, Marilyn Gordon, president and founder of Mediatude, a coaching business that reinforces and enhances their clients’ communication skills, explains how listening can improve people’s way of communicating with each other. As a coach, entrepreneur and educator, Marilyn believes listening is one of the most fundamental practices for people to connect.
We talk at a rate of 25-200 words per minute, but we think 1000-3000 words per minute. We get distracted by our own thoughts and it's hard to stay in the moment and listen to the other person, that is why it is crucial to learn how to better listen to others.
She describes two forms of listening – empathic and critical. Critical listening is ideal for the workplace as it is the ability to formulate a response. Empathic listening applies more to the personal life as it provides reassurance that the person you are listening to is heard and understood.
With communication being an important aspect to establish and strengthen relationships, basic skills that complete the communication process such as listening can be learned and improved. Not only will this be useful for one’s career, but also for everyday life.
Action Tips
Develop the crave to listen
Become someone who wants to be a good listener.
Stay in the moment when listening to others.
Don’t fall in love with the sound of your voice. Some people love to talk.
Don’t begin formulating your response while you’re still listening.
Don’t let your mind drift.
Minimize distractions.
Don’t minimize the speaker.
Know when to be silent.
Listening is an art, so you have to practice it.

“You can teach new skills, learn terminology, new techniques, but you can't change someone's personality, their work ethic, their attitude towards life. So make sure you surround yourself with people who have a positive attitude are curious about the value that they grade, not just the paycheck that they receive, who come to work with a sparkle in their eyes, as they understand that the work they do is not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity for growth.” (03:47 - 04:16)
“Don't forget that you are responsible for your team and the results that they create. If you are unhappy, then first start by looking at yourself and your leadership style. How to Start Meaningful Conversations?
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
Do you struggle with having meaningful conversations and making a good first impression on the phone? Everyone wants to make a good first impression, but often they start conversations in a way that is too focused on them and not focused enough on the person they are speaking with. In today’s episode, Wendy Harris, Queen of Conversation at Making Conversations Count Ltd, talks about her experience in telemarketing and how to have impactful conversations over the phone. Wendy has been in telemarketing since 1988, hosts her own podcast dedicated to making conversations, and is the author of Making Conversations Count: How To Sell Over The Phone.
The most important thing to know about making phone conversations count is that you have to be speaking to the right person, about the right thing, at the right time. You can make hundreds of calls, but if you’re advertising something that person doesn’t want to hear about, it will never turn into a sale. Results will eventually come by just talking to enough people consistently and pre-qualifying what their needs are. When you approach a conversation with the intention of hearing the other person out instead of immediately spilling your sales pitch to them, you will have a more impactful conversation.
Tune into this week’s episode of Powerful Marketing Tips for a conversation about making meaningful conversations over the phone. Learn best practices for making a good first impression, being more relaxed on the phone, and turning phone calls into sales.
Quotes
• “We all strive for a modicum of respect from other people. So you can only earn that if you behave in a certain way.” (6:02-6:12)
• “I would challenge anybody to say that sales training is all about what you say and the process. It's not, it's about who you are, and how you say it. That comes before anything else.” (7:42-7:59)
• “When it comes to wanting to make that [good] impression, the intention has to be not about me. This is all about them. And if that intention is there from the off, the conversation flows a lot easier. It's way more natural. And I think it kind of takes the stress out of it for yourself as well.” (9:09-9:37)
• “The only person that's worried about how you sound is you. Nobody's going to really judge you.” (10:01-10:20)
• “It basically comes down to three things for you to get the form. And that is speaking to the right person for the right reason, at the right time. And then the last part is, the results will come. Because you're talking to the right people about the right thing at the right time.” (18:26-18:50)
• “If you just rang somebody once a day, then in the course of a month, you've had 20 conversations or attempted 20 conversations. And if all you're looking to do really is to see when the best time would be for you to have the real conversation with the meat on the bones that's going into your forward calendar. So by the end of the year, you've got 200 conversations that you're having. So 200 conversations with people, how many then turn into customers, because you're talking to the right people, and you're talking to them at the right time for the right reason? Your forecasting becomes so much simpler. That's just one a day.” (30:52-31:44)

How to Become a Recognized Authority in Your Field?
Tuesday Jun 28, 2022
Tuesday Jun 28, 2022
Are you interested in becoming a recognized authority in your field, but you’re not sure where to start? Everyone starts out as a novice and through experience becomes an expert. However, most do not go on to become recognized authorities. The difference between a general expert and an authority is visibility and specialization. Without choosing a specific niche, you will not be able to move forward and become a recognized authority and will instead, remain an invisible generalist. In today’s episode, Alastair McDermott, digital marketing and business strategist at The Recognized Authority, shares his tips for going from unrecognized generalist to successful specialist.
It can be really scary to take the first steps toward becoming an authority in your field because you first have to commit to not only a field, but a specific niche within that field. When deciding on a niche, consider what you love doing, what you are good at doing, what pays well, and what would benefit the world. And from there, see where your answers intersect. Alastair explains that to build your authority, you will have to turn away opportunities that fall outside of your chosen niche. This will open up your time to research, write, and publish content for your specialty. As you produce more content for your field, you will start to be recognized for your expertise and your network will organically grow.
Tune into this week’s episode of Powerful Marketing Tips for a conversation about becoming a recognized authority in your field. Learn why it is important to choose a niche, how to get started gaining authority, and when it is appropriate to pass over a client or opportunity in favor of ones that are a better fit.
Quotes
• “I love the concept of people building their own authority and becoming known as a recognized authority in their field because I think it's such a great way to do marketing. It's such a pleasant way to do marketing because it's not hard selling. It's just a really nice way because what you're doing typically is you're teaching and you're helping people.” (3:45-3:67)
• “If you want to become an authority, you have to be known for something. And that's the difficult part because when you're niching down, you're actually turning away opportunity. You are making a conscious decision to turn away most opportunities in order to say a bigger yes to a small subset of that.” (08:10-8:30)
• “You've got to get yourself to the place where you can afford to say no, and then you can become more choosy. The opportunity cost of saying yes is too much. So you have to say no so that you keep your free time for when the right fit client comes along.” (10:55-11:12)
• “What are you good at doing? What do you love doing? What pays really well? And what does the world need?” (14:27-14:30)
• “In businesses, we run small tests all the time. And it's not really failing, it's just learning that something doesn't work and trying something else.” (19:48-19:54)
• “Everybody starts out as a novice, and then you go on to become this invisible expert. And then the path ahead of you goes through a mountain range. And that mountain range is specialization.” (20:39-20:51)
